How do I care for antique gold rings?

These historical pieces require gentle handling due to the delicate nature of soft organic gems like pearls and turquoise. Cleaning should be done with a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that damage the original metal finish. Storing each piece individually prevents the fifteen-carat gold bands from scratching softer stones or wearing down adjacent engravings. Regular checks by a jeweller ensure the claw and flush settings remain secure.

Can these rings be resized safely?

Resizing is generally possible because the solid fifteen-carat gold shanks respond well to traditional jeweler techniques such as laser welding or soldering. However, care must be taken to preserve any interior hallmarks or hand-engraved inscriptions located on the band. Consulting a specialist familiar with antique jewellery ensures the structural integrity of side stones or complex shoulder engravings is not compromised during the adjustment process.

What does a Regard ring mean?

A Regard ring spells out the word regard using the initial gemstone of each set stone: Ruby, Emerald, Garnet, Amethyst, Ruby, and Diamond. These acrostic pieces served as sentimental tokens of affection during the Victorian era. Variations like Dearest followed the same acrostic principle using Diamond, Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby, Sapphire, and Tourmaline. They showcase the Victorian preference for symbolic communication through coded jewellery.

How are Victorian gold alloys different?

Fifteen-carat gold contains a higher proportion of pure gold than modern nine-carat standards, resulting in a deeper, warmer colour that ages with a distinctive patina. This alloy was standard in Britain until regulations changed in the twentieth century. The metal composition allows for robust durability while maintaining a rich hue that distinguishes antique British jewellery from contemporary equivalents.
