Where should I place a turn wood table?

Smaller occasional and lamp tables fit comfortably beside sofas or armchairs to hold lighting and drinks. Larger gateleg and writing formats work well in studies, hallways, or living rooms as functional desks or display surfaces. Consider the scale of the room and the height of surrounding furniture when selecting a piece. Compact tripod tables tuck easily into corners, while nest of tables offer flexible surface space that stores away neatly.

How do I identify the period of a table?

Examine the secondary woods used in drawer linings and internal framing, as these often reveal the manufacturing era. Construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetails or machine-made joints, provide further clues to age. Stylistic markers like Georgian tripod bases, Regency brass casters, or Victorian raised pediment backs help narrow down the decade. Comparing the proportions and decorative motifs against documented historical examples confirms the period.

Can I use an antique table for daily work?

Many Victorian and Georgian writing tables and desks were built specifically for daily correspondence and administrative tasks. Their sturdy construction and built-in drawers make them practical for modern home office use. Ensure the working height and legroom accommodate your chair comfortably. Using a protective blotter or leather pad on the writing surface helps prevent ink stains and scratches during daily tasks.
