What is a turn of the century bookcase?

A turn of the century bookcase refers to shelving units and display cabinets produced around the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. These pieces encompass open shelves, glazed cupboards, and tiered etageres. They reflect the domestic storage needs of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Mahogany and walnut serve as the predominant woods in these examples.

How were old bookcases used?

These pieces served primarily for storing household libraries, displaying ceramics, and holding decorative ornaments in parlours and studies. Multitiered whatnots kept frequently accessed volumes or decorative items within reach. Larger glazed cabinets protected valuable or leather-bound books from dust and light. Smaller wall shelves and corner units maximised space in compact Victorian rooms.

Where should I place a whatnot?

Whatnots function well in corners or against living room walls where their multiple tiers can hold books or small decorative objects. Their open design keeps rooms feeling spacious while providing ample vertical storage. Placing them away from direct sunlight helps preserve the polished mahogany or walnut surfaces. Ensure the floor is level so that multitiered stands remain stable.

How do I identify a Victorian bookcase?

Victorian bookcases often feature dark timber such as mahogany or walnut, occasionally incorporating glazed doors or turned legs. They frequently show stylistic influences from the Aesthetic Movement or standard Victorian revival forms. Construction details like original brass castors and hand-cut joinery help distinguish these older pieces. Examining the backboards and interior timbers confirms the nineteenth-century origin.
