What were travel storage chests used for?

These trunks carried uniforms, personal belongings, and equipment across long land and sea journeys during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Officers, merchants, and travellers relied on them to protect valuables from moisture, dust, and rough handling while on the move.

How do I live with a travel storage chest?

They function exceptionally well as coffee tables in living spaces, offering generous internal storage for blankets and books. Their robust construction and dark timber tones anchor a room while providing a practical surface for daily use.

How do I tell Victorian trunks from Georgian ones?

Georgian and George II examples often display rich mahogany timbers and restrained, elegant brass hardware suited to gentleman's quarters. Victorian pieces frequently utilise heavier iron reinforcement, camphorwood, or painted pine as global travel demands shifted toward industrial utility.

Why use camphorwood for these trunks?

Camphorwood produces a distinct natural aroma that effectively repels moths and other destructive insects during extended tropical voyages. This practical property made the timber a preferred choice for military officers stationed in distant colonies.
