A tallboy is a vertical storage unit, frequently structured as a chest on chest or a single tall chest of drawers. It provides maximum storage capacity with a minimal floor footprint. These pieces appeared in various woods and styles across the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian periods.

How do I date a tall wooden tallboy?

Dating relies on identifying timber choices, construction techniques, and stylistic details. Georgian pieces often feature figured mahogany and bracket feet, while Victorian examples display heavier proportions. Hardware styles and secondary woods inside the drawers also offer clues to the period of manufacture.

Where should I place a tallboy?

A tallboy suits bedrooms, dressing rooms, or hallways where floor space is limited but vertical storage is required. Its height makes efficient use of wall space without crowding a room. Ensure the piece is secured to the wall if necessary to maintain stability given its height.
