How do I date a tall chest?

Dating relies on observing timber choices, handle styles, and construction methods like dovetailing. Earlier pieces often display solid oak or walnut construction. Later Victorian and Edwardian examples frequently utilise machine-sawn elements and different veneer application techniques alongside distinct brass hardware.

A tallboy refers to a tall chest of drawers or a chest-on-chest arrangement. These units stack storage vertically to conserve floor space. They appear in various period woods, offering deep lower compartments and shallower upper drawers for diverse garments.

How do I care for antique timber?

Maintaining antique timber requires steady indoor humidity and protection from direct sunlight. Regular dusting preserves the polished finish. Application of traditional wax feeds the wood and prevents the surface from drying out over decades of domestic use.

Where does a tall chest fit?

A tall chest suits bedrooms and dressing rooms requiring vertical storage capacity. Its narrow footprint accommodates confined wall spaces. Placement away from heat sources ensures the timber and veneers remain stable across seasonal temperature shifts.
