What is a sterling silver gilt box?

These pieces are small metal containers made from solid sterling silver with a gold wash applied to the interior surfaces. The gilt layer protected the silver from tarnishing caused by contents like tobacco or scented vinegar. Craftsmen produced them in various forms including snuff boxes, vinaigrettes, and trinket cases, often decorating the exteriors with repoussé work, engraving, or cast borders.

How do I date a silver box?

Dating relies primarily on the hallmarks stamped directly onto the silver by official assay offices. These marks typically include a date letter, a standard mark indicating sterling silver, and a maker's mark. Stylistic clues such as Victorian repoussé floral motifs or Georgian restrained lines also help narrow down the period of manufacture when combined with hallmarking evidence.

How were vinaigrettes used?

Vinaigrettes served as personal accessories for carrying aromatic vinegar during the Georgian and Victorian eras. Owners would inhale the scent through a pierced internal grille when encountering unpleasant odours or feeling faint. The gold gilt interior prevented the acidic vinegar from corroding the outer silver casing over repeated use.

How should I care for silver gilt?

Cleaning requires a gentle approach to preserve the delicate gold layer applied over the sterling silver. Avoid abrasive silver polishes that can wear away the thin gilt wash on the interior surfaces. Store the boxes in dry environments away from direct sunlight, and use soft microfiber cloths to remove surface dust without scrubbing engraved or embossed details.
