What is a small wooden locker?

A small wooden locker is a compact bedside cabinet, pot cupboard or night storage chest designed for domestic use. These pieces provide enclosed storage for personal items within a small footprint. They appear primarily in bedrooms and small rooms, constructed from timbers such as mahogany, oak and walnut across various historical periods.

How were they used historically?

These cabinets served beside beds to hold chamber pots, night-time candles, books and personal belongings. Their enclosed doors kept bedroom essentials tidy and out of sight. In various forms, they also functioned as small corner cupboards or lamp tables depending on the room layout and domestic requirements.

How do I date a wooden locker?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, construction joints, hardware and decorative styles present on the piece. Victorian and Edwardian examples often feature specific veneer work, handle types and wood stains. Period characteristics such as Gothic Revival carving or satinwood inlay help narrow down the decade of manufacture when combined with structural evidence.

Where should I place one today?

These compact cupboards fit well beside modern beds as functional nightstands with concealed storage. Their small scale also suits hallways, landings or tight corners needing surface space and a cupboard. They pair effectively with diverse interior schemes by introducing period timber texture and practical enclosed shelving to contemporary rooms.
