What were small trinket boxes used for originally?

These containers held personal items such as pinches of snuff, medicinal pills, scented sponges, stamps, and small jewellery. Their compact sizes allowed owners to carry them in pockets or place them on dressing tables and writing desks. Different forms suited specific contents, from flat silver boxes for dry powders to partitioned wooden chests for rings and keepsakes.

How can I date a silver pill box?

British silver items carry hallmarks that include assay office marks, date letters, and maker stamps. Comparing the stamped letters against standard silver date charts reveals the exact year of manufacture. Style, construction methods, and hinge design also offer clues when hallmarks are rubbed or absent on older items.

What is an apprentice piece chest?

Apprentice pieces are miniature versions of furniture constructed by trainees to demonstrate mastery of joinery techniques to guild masters. They feature authentic drawer construction, handles, and timber matching their full-sized counterparts. Cabinetmakers kept these items on display in workshops as samples of their joinery capabilities.

How do I care for antique wooden boxes?

Keep wooden boxes away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature swings to prevent timber from splitting or veneers from lifting. Apply a microcrystalline wax sparingly to nourish the wood surface. Avoid excessive moisture and damp environments, particularly for items featuring paper linings or delicate metal hinges.
