Where should I place a small open bookcase?

These compact bookcases fit well in alcoves, hallways or beside seating areas where floor space is limited. Their open profile keeps rooms feeling light while providing practical storage. Position them away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to protect the polished wood surfaces and prevent timber warping over time.

How do I care for antique wood shelves?

Dust the surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent dirt accumulation. Avoid using modern silicone sprays that can damage historic polish. Apply a traditional beeswax conditioner occasionally to nourish the timber and maintain a natural sheen. Keep the shelves in stable humidity conditions.

What is the difference between an etagere and a whatnot?

An etagere functions primarily as an open display piece for decorative objects with multiple tiers. A whatnot serves a similar multi-tiered purpose but often includes small drawers or enclosed spaces. Both forms developed to meet nineteenth-century demands for organised display furniture in parlours and drawing rooms.

Wall hanging shelves suit lighter volumes, decorative objects and ceramics rather than heavy folio books. Secure wall fixings matching the specific wall type are essential for safe weight support. Check the structural integrity of the backboards and hanging brackets before loading the shelves with heavy items.
