What is a small commode table?

A small commode table is a compact storage item designed for domestic use, functioning as a bedside cabinet, nightstand, or miniature chest of drawers. These pieces combine practical enclosed storage with decorative period character, utilising timbers such as mahogany, walnut, and oak.

How were these tables used originally?

Historically, these compact cabinets served multiple private functions in bedrooms and dressing rooms. Some housed chamber pots, while others held night essentials or personal items. Over time, many close stools and pot cupboards were adapted into conventional bedside tables for modern living.

How do I date a small commode?

Dating relies on identifying the primary timbers, construction methods, and stylistic influences. Georgian and Victorian pieces often show distinct structural characteristics and handle types. Revival pieces from the twentieth century frequently adopt earlier French or English aesthetics while retaining newer construction markers.

Are these pieces suitable for modern bedrooms?

Their modest proportions make these tables practical for contemporary spaces where floor space is limited. They provide concealed bedside storage without dominating a room. Mixing periods, such as pairing a Victorian mahogany cupboard with modern decor, adds historical contrast to an interior.
