What is a pot cupboard?

A pot cupboard is a small enclosed cabinet designed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to conceal a chamber pot. Over time, these versatile units transitioned into general bedside storage for books and personal items.

How do I date a bedside cabinet?

Dating relies on identifying characteristic construction methods, timber choices, and stylistic details associated with periods like the Victorian era or the 1930s. Hardware styles, leg shapes such as barley twists or cabriole legs, and veneer types offer clear chronological clues.

Are bedside cupboards usually found in pairs?

Many Victorian and 1930s bedside chests and cabinets were originally manufactured as matching pairs to flank a double bed. Single cupboards are equally common, originating from smaller bedrooms or single bed setups of the nineteenth century.

What woods were commonly used?

Mahogany, oak, and walnut dominate the construction of traditional bedside furniture across the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian periods. Finer examples incorporate decorative veneers like burr walnut, flame mahogany, and satin birch on the primary surfaces.
