What were silver top boxes used for originally?

These containers served primarily on dressing tables and desks to hold personal items such as pins, jewellery, stamps, and cosmetics. Glass jars kept powders and creams contained, while smaller boxes protected delicate keepsakes. Their presence in bedrooms and studies reflected the structured grooming and correspondence habits of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Many were also given as gifts to mark specific occasions.

How can I tell the age of a silver top box?

Dating relies primarily on the hallmarks stamped onto the silver lid or mount, which indicate the specific year the piece was assayed. Stylistic indicators such as Art Deco geometric enamel or Victorian floral engraving provide further context. The materials used for the body, including cut glass, coromandel wood, or tortoiseshell, also align with particular manufacturing periods.

How do I care for a silver top box at home?

Preserving these items involves gentle cleaning of the silver components using a soft cloth to avoid wearing down delicate engravings or guilloché enamel. Harsh dips should be avoided, particularly near fitted glass or wooden bases. Glass bodies can be washed in warm soapy water, while wooden or velvet-lined interiors benefit from being kept dry away from direct sunlight.
