What are silver pierced glass baskets used for?

These baskets served primarily at the dining table for holding sugar, fruit or sweets. The openwork metal frame allowed the coloured glass liner to be seen clearly from the sides. They functioned as both practical tableware and decorative centrepieces during formal meals. The addition of swing handles made them easy to pass among guests.

How do you clean silver pierced glass?

Cleaning requires separating the glass liner from the silver mount to protect both materials. The glass can be washed gently in warm soapy water. The silver mount needs careful polishing with a suitable cloth to avoid getting polish trapped in the pierced apertures. Using a soft brush helps clear residue from the openwork design.

Are the glass liners usually original?

Many pieces retain their original blown or cut glass liners, which fit the contours of the metal frame exactly. Replacement liners appear often because fragile glass was easily broken over centuries of use. A correct-fitting liner sits level within the basket or pot without excessive movement. Examining the glass helps determine whether it matches the period of the silver mount.

How can you tell a Victorian piece from an Edwardian one?

Victorian examples often feature heavier silver mounts with dense floral or geometric pierced patterns. Styles from this era lean towards ornate detailing and robust construction. Edwardian pieces tend to show lighter construction with Neoclassical motifs such as urns, swags and delicate latticework. Hallmarks stamped on the metal provide the exact year of manufacture for dating.
