How do I assemble a knockdown wardrobe?

Knockdown wardrobes use pegged joints, sliding slots, or internal bolts to hold the major panels together without permanent glue. Take care to note the alignment of the panels during disassembly so the structure squares correctly upon reassembly. Enlist a second person to support the heavy crown and side sections while securing the internal fixings to prevent strain on the historical timber.

Can I use an armoire for modern clothes hanging?

Many older cupboards and armoires were built for folded linen or shallow shelves rather than modern coat hangers. Check the internal depth before purchase to ensure standard clothes hangers fit comfortably with the doors closed. Some pieces require the installation of a custom hanging rail or the adjustment of existing shelf supports to accommodate longer garments.

How do I care for wax-finished pine?

Waxed pine benefits from occasional applications of beeswax to nourish the wood and maintain a soft sheen. Avoid placing these pieces near direct heat sources or in damp environments, which can cause the timber to warp or split. Dust regularly with a dry cloth and buff gently along the grain rather than using modern silicone polishes.

What is the difference between an armoire and a linen press?

An armoire is primarily designed as a wardrobe with full-height doors enclosing hanging space or shelves for garments. A linen press traditionally houses sliding trays or shelves in the upper section with a chest of drawers built into the base. Both serve similar storage functions in a bedroom but reflect different regional and period approaches to domestic organisation.
