What periods do these lights date from?

The listings span several periods, ranging from eighteenth-century originals to nineteenth-century revival pieces and early twentieth-century interpretations. Many items reflect nineteenth-century craftsmanship inspired by earlier French royal styles. Twentieth-century reproductions and adaptations also appear frequently, capturing the ornate aesthetic of the Louis XV era using period techniques.

How were wall sconces originally used?

Wall sconces were positioned around rooms to maximise the flickering illumination of wax candles before the advent of gas and electric lighting. Placed strategically near mirrors or architectural focal points, they bounced light across the interior. Today, many of these historic fixtures have been rewired for modern electricity while retaining their original aesthetic charm and mounting structure.

Are these fixtures suitable for modern wiring?

Many wall lights and chandeliers listed have already been rewired and prepared for modern installation in contemporary homes. Buyers should examine individual listings to confirm whether electrical components meet current safety standards. Professional installation is recommended to support the weight of heavy bronze and crystal fixtures securely against interior walls or ceilings.

How do I distinguish bronze from brass?

Bronze typically has a heavier weight and a darker, richer undertone beneath the gilding compared to standard brass. Over centuries, bronze castings also allowed for sharper, more intricate chasing of fine decorative details. Brass was often utilised for lighter wall fixtures and later commercial reproductions, though both metals were frequently gilded to achieve a unified appearance.
