Are these lamps safe to use today?

Many vintage lamps are sold with original wiring that requires professional rewiring or inspection before regular daily use. Buyers should check whether a piece has been updated with modern electrical components while preserving its outer vintage appearance. Electrical safety standards have evolved considerably since the 1920s and 1930s. Ensuring a qualified electrician examines older desk lamps guarantees safe operation on contemporary domestic circuits.

How do I identify an Art Deco desk lamp?

Art Deco desk lamps typically feature geometric patterns, symmetrical lines, and industrial materials like chrome, brass, and Bakelite. Look for motifs such as zig-zags, shell shapes, or stylised figures integrated into the base. These pieces often embrace the machine age aesthetic with smooth surfaces and adjustable mechanical arms. Their construction marks a distinct shift away from ornate Victorian styles toward functional modernism.

What is a bankers desk lamp?

A bankers desk lamp is a traditional task light featuring a heavy brass base and a distinctive green or amber glass shade. It was designed to provide clear, focused illumination for office work and legal paperwork. Most examples utilise an adjustable brass stem and a cylindrical or curved glass shade that directs light downward. They remain a practical and recognizable staple of traditional office decor.

Can I adjust the height and angle?

Many of these desk lamps incorporate adjustable arms, pivoting joints, or flexible metal tubing designed to alter the direction of light. Models featuring mechanical spring systems or friction hinges allow precise positioning for reading and writing. Fixed-stem lamps rely on their solid base and angled shades rather than moving parts. Checking the specific description of a piece reveals its range of movement and mechanical capability.
