Realism art is a movement focused on portraying subjects truthfully and accurately, without theatrical or romantic embellishment. It concentrates on everyday people, landscapes, and interiors observed directly from life. In this selection, the pieces reflect European and British traditions from the nineteenth century onward, capturing human character and natural environments with direct observation.

How should I display an oil painting?

Oil paintings on canvas or panel benefit from stable indoor environments away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity. Proper wall placement protects the pigments and the wooden support from warping. Matching the painting with a suitable period frame, often gilded wood, enhances the visual presentation while supporting the edges of the canvas.

How do I identify a genre painting?

Genre paintings depict scenes of ordinary daily life, such as card players, street sellers, or domestic interiors, rather than grand historical or mythological events. These works provide a window into the social habits of past eras. Artists used these subjects to record authentic human interactions and working conditions with careful attention to costume and setting.

What is the difference between canvas and panel?

Canvas is a flexible woven fabric stretched over a wooden frame, offering slight give and a textured surface for brushstrokes. Panel refers to a rigid wooden board that provides a firm, smooth support for finer detail. Both materials were widely utilised by nineteenth century artists depending on their preferred technique and portability requirements.
