How do I care for rush seats?

Keep woven rush seats dry and clean them gently with a soft brush to remove dust. Avoid excess moisture, which can weaken the natural fibres over time. Applying a light, occasional mist of water can help prevent very dry indoor air from making the rush brittle.

Can I mix different chair styles around a table?

Mixing regional chairs of similar height and timber creates a collected, informal dining arrangement. Matching sets offer uniformity, but mismatched country chairs highlight individual character. Aim for a consistent wood tone or matching back heights to tie disparate seating together harmoniously.

Are these benches suitable for daily dining?

Long wooden benches provide versatile seating that tucks neatly beneath dining tables when not in use. Their sturdy construction handles regular family meals with ease. Adding loose squab cushions can improve comfort during long dinner parties.

How do I date an antique country chair?

Examine the construction methods, tool marks, and wood species to estimate the period of manufacture. Hand-pegged joints and irregular hand-turned spindles often point to earlier rural production. Comparing the style against regional design timelines helps narrow down the decade or century.
