How do I care for works on paper?

Keep watercolours and drawings away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of the pigments and yellowing of the paper supports. Display them in rooms with stable humidity levels. Ensure framing is secure and uses acid-free mounts to protect the integrity of the paper over time.

Are these pieces original?

The selection includes original nineteenth-century oil paintings and hand-painted watercolours alongside period prints, lithographs, and photogravures. Each listing specifies the medium and the nature of the work. Examine the description to distinguish between unique painted works and later printed reproductions.

What subjects are typical?

Common themes include literary narratives from Dante and Shakespeare, classical mythology, romantic figures, and pastoral landscapes. Portraits of ladies and gentlemen from the Victorian era also feature prominently. Artists drew inspiration from poetry, ancient tales, and symbolic storytelling to shape their compositions.

How do I date these artworks?

Dating relies on recorded artist lifespans, stylistic markers of the Victorian and Arts and Crafts periods, and accompanying framing materials. Many pieces carry specific nineteenth-century or early twentieth-century dates. Examine signatures, inscriptions, and documentation provided in individual listings to confirm the period of creation.
