A tallboy is a vertical storage chest typically built in two stacked sections to maximise capacity while occupying a smaller floor footprint. These pieces evolved from earlier joined chests and developed into sophisticated dual-carcase furniture during the 18th Century.

How do I date a tallboy?

Dating relies on examining timber species, construction methods, drawer linings, and handle hardware styles. Earlier 17th Century pieces feature heavy oak framing and geometric mouldings, whereas Georgian and Regency items favour mahogany veneers and cleaner architectural lines.

Where were tallboys placed?

Tallboys served primarily as bedroom storage furniture for garments, linens, and personal valuables. Their vertical design made them practical for domestic spaces requiring significant storage without expanding floor area.

How do I care for wood surfaces?

Maintain timber surfaces by applying traditional beeswax periodically and avoiding direct sunlight or high humidity. Keep the environment stable to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer lifting on older carcases.
