Will a standard modern mattress fit these antique beds?

Many nineteenth and early twentieth-century French beds were made to continental sizing standards rather than modern British dimensions. Double and king size formats may require custom mattress sourcing or minor rail adjustments. Buyers should measure the internal wooden width and length carefully before purchasing bedding. Consulting the specific dimensions listed prevents placement issues in standard modern bedrooms.

How do I care for parquetry veneer surfaces?

Polishing parquetry wooden bed frames requires simple wax formulations applied sparingly with soft cloths. Avoid modern silicone sprays that degrade antique finishes over time. Keep these beds away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent the timber veneers from drying and lifting. Gentle dusting maintains the natural lustre of the mahogany and fruitwood.

How do I distinguish Louis XVI style from French Empire?

Louis XVI style beds rely on straight architectural lines, restrained symmetry, and classical geometric parquetry. They offer a lighter aesthetic compared to earlier heavy revival pieces. French Empire frames tend to show bolder military and classical motifs with heavier proportions. Both styles utilise fine timbers but project distinct architectural moods within a bedroom.

Are these beds easy to assemble at home?

Period bed frames generally utilise traditional iron bed bolts and tenon joints rather than modern cam-lock systems. Assembly requires basic spanners and two people to handle large headboards and footboards safely. Most pieces separate into headboard, footboard, and two side rails for transport. Proper alignment of the original corner brackets ensures the frame stays square and stable.
