How do I date an ornate frame?

Dating relies on examining the construction of the timber corners, the composition of the gesso, and the style of the scrollwork. Earlier examples often utilise hand-carved elements and traditional gold leaf over red bole. Later reproductions and mid-century pieces frequently employ synthetic binders in the moulding process and brighter, more uniform metallic paints.

What is a crystoleom painting?

A crystoleom is a Victorian artwork created by taking a paper print, sticking it face down to glass, rubbing away the paper pulp, and painting the reverse by hand. This process produced a luminous image with a distinct depth, usually protected beneath a curved or dome-fronted glass panel.

Where should I hang heavy gilt frames?

Heavy giltwood and gesso frames require secure wall anchors fixed directly into masonry or wall studs to support their substantial weight. Ensure the hanging wire and ring fixings on the reverse are robust enough for the load. Position them away from direct sunlight and dampness to protect the delicate gilt surfaces and paper prints.

How do I clean antique gilt frames?

Dust gilt frames gently with a very soft, dry brush or feather duster to remove surface particles without disturbing fragile gesso or leaf. Avoid using water, chemical cleaners, or abrasive cloths entirely. Moisture can penetrate cracks in the gesso and cause the underlying wood to swell or the metallic finish to flake away.
