Are these canvases original period works?

The selection includes authentic period works ranging from the seventeenth century through to mid-century creations, alongside occasional interpretive pieces after earlier masters. Examining the canvas texture, stretcher construction, and the ageing of the oil pigments helps determine the historical context of each piece.

How do I date a decorative frame?

Frame styles often correspond to the era of the painting, with heavy Victorian moulded gesso and twentieth-century swept gilt designs reflecting prevailing interior aesthetics. Corner joints, backing materials, and the composition of the gesso provide further clues to the manufacturing decade.

Where should I hang a large framed canvas?

Large framed works require a sturdy wall anchor capable of supporting the combined weight of both the heavy timber stretcher and the ornate gesso moulding. Placing the artwork away from direct sunlight and steady moisture sources protects both the oil pigments and the delicate gilt finish over time.
