How do I care for an old platinum ring?

Platinum is a durable metal that withstands daily wear, but the delicate claws and old cut stones require gentle cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemical dips that might harm softer coloured gems like emeralds or opals. Periodic checks by a professional jeweller ensure that the platinum settings remain tight and secure around the diamonds and gemstones, preserving the structural integrity of the piece.

Are these rings suitable for daily wear?

Most pieces handle everyday use well due to the inherent strength of platinum, which holds stones securely without wearing down quickly. Care should still be taken with Edwardian filigree or high-set antique clusters during heavy manual tasks. Matching a vintage engagement ring with a wedding band requires attention to the profile of the setting to prevent rubbing and premature wear on either piece of jewellery.

What is the difference between Edwardian and Art Deco rings?

Edwardian jewellery relies on graceful garlands, lace-like platinum wirework, and softer floral motifs that echo nineteenth-century aesthetics. The focus rests on lightness, intricate piercing, and subtle millegrain borders. Art Deco design shifts towards bold symmetry, rigid geometric lines, and strong contrasts between platinum and saturated gemstones like rubies and sapphires. The transition reflects changing artistic tastes following the First World War.

Can I resize an old platinum ring?

Resizing is generally possible because platinum can be cut, heated, and soldered by a skilled jeweller experienced in working with antique metals. The presence of delicate side engraving or complex shoulder stones requires careful execution to preserve the original design. Consulting a specialist ensures the structural join remains seamless and the surrounding stones suffer no thermal stress during the adjustment process.
