How do I assemble a knockdown wardrobe?

Knockdown wardrobes utilise internal wooden pegs, bolts, or slot-together joints designed to let the main panels separate for transport. Assembly typically requires two people to align the sides, top, and base before securing the structure. Once the frame stands square, the doors hang on their original hinges and the back panels slide into place to lock the rigidity of the carcase.

What is the difference between an armoire and a wardrobe?

Armoire is a traditional continental term for a large cupboard, while wardrobe specifically denotes a tall piece fitted for hanging garments. In British usage, the terms often overlap depending on regional workshop traditions. Many listings use both titles interchangeably for large double-door storage furniture originating from France, Hungary, or domestic English makers.

How should I care for waxed pine?

Waxed pine requires periodic application of quality beeswax to nourish the softwood and maintain a protective barrier against moisture. Regular buffing with a soft cloth preserves the deep lustre of the timber grain. Keep these pieces away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent the pine from drying out or warping over time.

Can I paint a waxed pine wardrobe?

Many period wardrobes are sold in a bare or previously waxed state specifically intended for finishing to personal taste. Preparing the timber involves cleaning the surface thoroughly and applying an appropriate primer to block old wax before painting. Using breathable mineral or chalk paints allows the pine to age naturally beneath the new colour while retaining the character of the mouldings.
