How do I assemble a metal bed frame?

Most antique metal bedframes use a straightforward slot-in joint system where the side rails wedge directly into the headboard and footboard sockets. Gravity and the weight of the mattress lock the structure firmly into place once assembled. Ensure the frame stands on a level surface before adding slats and the mattress to prevent strain on the joints.

How do I care for painted iron frames?

Maintain painted iron surfaces by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleaning agents. Preserve the original finish by keeping the metal away from damp environments to prevent oxidation beneath the paint. Touch up any minor chips with sympathetic conservation paint if necessary to protect the underlying iron from rust.

What is a half tester bed?

A half tester incorporates a projecting canopy attached to the headboard, framing the pillow area rather than covering the entire length of the bed. This style was popular in Victorian bedrooms to support fabric draperies and curtains. The projecting framework is constructed from solid brass or iron to support the weight of the canopy without wall fixings.
