What were marquetry oval trays used for?

These trays served primarily for carrying tea sets, drinks, or small items during formal entertaining in domestic settings. Over time, many transitioned into decorative items or formed the upper tiers of occasional tables and etageres.

How do I date a tray?

Dating relies on timber selection, the style of the inlay work, and construction methods associated with Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian periods. Earlier examples often display deeper mahogany tones and restrained geometric inlay, while Edwardian pieces frequently utilise brighter satinwood and elaborate marquetry.

Are these trays suitable for daily use?

Many sturdy examples handle light serving duties, though delicate veneer and antique brass galleries require careful handling. Protecting the surface with glass or limiting them to display helps preserve the intricate wood inlay.

What is the difference between inlay and marquetry?

Inlay involves inserting pieces of contrasting material into a recessed solid wood base. Marquetry covers the entire surface with assembled veneer pieces to form a picture or pattern.
