What were marble top bedside lockers used for?

These cabinets served as bedside storage for personal items and chamber pots before modern plumbing became standard. The stone top provided a hygienic, wipe-clean surface for water jugs and glassware. Today, they function as practical nightstands where the stone top easily resists moisture from drinks and bedside lamps. The enclosed cupboard keeps books and nighttime essentials out of sight.

How do I identify the period of a bedside locker?

Dating relies on observing construction methods, timber choices, and stylistic revival markers like Louis XVI or Art Deco motifs. Nineteenth-century pieces often feature solid mahogany or walnut, while 1920s examples show distinct modernist geometric influences. Examining the interior linings and drawer joints provides further clues to the age. Continental pieces often incorporate regional locking mechanisms and specific hardware styles tied to particular decades.

Are marble top bedside cabinets waterproof?

The stone surface itself resists water and liquid spills effectively, making it ideal for bedside use. However, buyers should protect the surrounding timber carcase from standing water. Wiping the stone with a damp cloth maintains the finish without harming the historic materials underneath. Avoid harsh acidic cleaners that can etch polished marble surfaces over time.

Do these lockers usually come in pairs?

Many listings feature matching pairs, which suits modern bedroom layouts on either side of a bed. Single cabinets also appear frequently for smaller spaces or eclectic interior schemes. Pairs often exhibit identical timber graining and matching marble coloration. Purchasing a matched pair ensures symmetrical styling in the bedroom.
