How do I date a mahogany chest?

Dating relies on stylistic clues such as bracket feet, handle design, and drawer construction methods. Georgian pieces often feature hand-cut dovetails and oak drawer linings, while Victorian examples show machine-sawn elements and different hardware. Secondary timbers and overall proportions also help place a piece within the eighteenth, nineteenth, or early twentieth century.

What is a Wellington chest?

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow set of drawers secured by a locking pilaster strip down the right side. This hinged flap fastens with a key to lock all the drawers simultaneously. Originating in the nineteenth century, these cabinets provided secure storage for papers or valuables in a compact footprint.

How should I care for mahogany furniture?

Maintain mahogany surfaces by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding direct sunlight or excessive heat. Such environmental controls prevent the timber from drying out or splitting. Apply a traditional beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the wood and preserve the natural patination without building up heavy chemical layers.

What is a brushing slide?

A brushing slide is a pull-out board positioned immediately above the top drawer of a chest. Georgian owners used this surface to fold clothes or write notes without opening the main drawers. When pushed fully home, the slide sits flush against the cabinet frame, remaining discreetly hidden until needed.
