Regency library chairs often display classical influences, featuring elements like sabre legs, reeded frames, and scroll arms derived from Greek and Roman designs. They date from the early nineteenth century and prioritize clean architectural lines alongside functional comfort for reading.

Where were library chairs used?

Library chairs were built for domestic studies, private libraries, and institutional reading rooms where occupants required sturdy support for extended periods of reading. Their robust mahogany construction and ergonomic arm heights made them suitable for placement near desks or beside fireplaces.

Many library chairs feature leather upholstery, though others utilise fabric, velvet, calico, or hessian depending on their original purpose and subsequent restoration. Leather versions frequently display traditional button tufting and individual brass nail heads securing the hide to the frame.
