Where should I hang an overmantel mirror?

These large mirrors sit naturally above a fireplace mantel to reflect light and anchor the room's proportions. Ensure the wall structure securely supports the substantial weight of carved wood and gesso frames. Alternatively, position the piece opposite a window to maximise natural illumination across living spaces or hallways. Pay attention to ceiling heights when selecting taller overmantel formats.

How do I identify period styles?

Examine the framing motifs and symmetry to distinguish between Georgian, Regency, and Victorian iterations. Georgian pieces often utilise mahogany with fretwork, whereas Victorian examples favour ornate gilt plaster and arched crests. French pieces from the nineteenth century frequently display Rococo Revival curves or Louis XVI symmetry. Look at the construction techniques at the reverse to confirm age indicators.

What is mercury glass?

Mercury glass refers to double-walled glass objects silvered with a liquid mixture between the panes. This historical technique produces a characteristic cloudy and speckled reflection. Finding original mercury glass in nineteenth-century mirrors adds authenticity and charm to the piece. The mottled appearance develops naturally through age and chemical interaction.

How do I clean an antique gilt frame?

Dust the carved foliage gently with a soft, dry brush to prevent damage to delicate gesso and leaf. Avoid commercial liquid cleaners, moisture, and abrasive cloths that strip historical gilding. Preserving the fragile surface requires minimal intervention and careful handling during seasonal maintenance. Consult a specialist restorer if structural cleaning becomes necessary.
