Are these lamps converted from old vases?

Many of these pieces began life as decorative vases, ginger jars, or oil lamps before being adapted for modern electrical use. This method of conversion preserves historical ceramic bodies while providing functional illumination. Makers and decorators utilised high-fired porcelain and earthenware originally intended for display or domestic utility, later fitting them with brass and wiring.

How do I style a large lamp?

These tall lighting pieces require sturdy furniture such as sideboards, console tables, or large chests where their substantial height and decorated bodies can command the space. Pairing them with neutral fabric or silk shades allows the colourful glazes and painted motifs to remain the focal point. Consider the scale of the room and surrounding objects, as paired matching lamps create a strong symmetrical arrangement on either side of a fireplace or large piece of furniture.

What is Qianlong style?

This style references the decorative arts produced during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor in the 18th century, known for intricate enamelling, vibrant colour grounds, and refined form. Later European and export pieces adopted these aesthetic principles to capture the luxury of the imperial workshops. Items executed in this manner showcase meticulous brushwork and balanced compositions that translate well onto large decorative lamp bases.
