What periods do these nightstands come from?

The listings span the late nineteenth century through to nineteen thirty, capturing periods of revivalism such as Louis XV and Louis XVI. Many pieces date specifically from the early twentieth century. These dates reflect the historical eras that nineteenth and twentieth century cabinetmakers chose to emulate in their workshops.

How were these tables originally used?

Bedside cabinets and lamp tables served as functional bedroom furniture for holding lighting, books, and personal items. Their enclosed cupboards and drawers kept nighttime necessities neatly out of sight. Pairs were manufactured specifically to flank a bed symmetrically, maintaining the balanced aesthetic of a formal French interior.

Do the marble tops come off?

Marble tops on these cabinets are typically loose-fitting slabs resting directly on the wooden frame, secured only by their own weight and the surrounding wooden lip. This construction allowed for easier transport and cleaning in the bedroom. Buyers should lift the marble carefully when moving the cabinet to prevent chipping the polished edges.

How do I identify Louis XV style?

Louis XV style furniture is characterised by asymmetrical curves, cabriole legs, and naturalistic floral motifs without straight lines. Ormolu mounts on these pieces often trace the sweeping outlines of the apron and legs. This aesthetic emerged in eighteenth-century France and experienced widespread revivals throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Are these tables truly matched pairs?

Makers constructed these cabinets simultaneously to ensure identical dimensions, timber grain direction, and marquetry layout. Such pieces were sold together as unified suites for the bedroom. Matching sets maintain consistent patination and wear across both units, distinguishing them from assembled pairs gathered at a later date.
