How do I identify a true seventeenth century chair?

Authentic seventeenth century pieces display hand-cut joinery secured with wooden pegs, deep patination acquired over centuries, and construction entirely from regional oak. The wear patterns on the seat and arms reflect genuine historical use. Revival pieces from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries often feature machine-tooled elements, brighter timber tones beneath the finish, and construction methods characteristic of later Victorian workshops.

Where were these armchairs used historically?

These sturdy wooden chairs primarily occupied the principal rooms of manor houses and prosperous farmhouses, where the head of the home would sit. They also appeared in grand halls and council chambers as symbols of status. Over time, many found their way into libraries, studies, and hallways as decorative yet functional seating arrangements.

How should I care for antique oak furniture?

Maintain the timber by keeping the chair away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight, which can dry out and split the ancient oak. Occasional application of appropriate wax polish helps preserve the finish and nourish the grain. Avoid using modern liquid cleaning sprays, as these can penetrate open joints and soften historic wax layers built up over generations.

What is the difference between Jacobean and Carolean styles?

Jacobean design, spanning the early seventeenth century, focuses on architectural stiffness, geometric panelling, and strapwork carving. The overall aesthetic is severe, heavy, and strictly symmetrical. Carolean design emerges later in the seventeenth century with greater flamboyance, introducing putti, elaborate scrollwork, and dynamic barley twist turnings influenced by continental Baroque trends.
