What is an italian inlay centre table used for?

These tables were historically placed in the middle of principal rooms to display decorative objects, lamps, or books. In modern interiors, they function as striking coffee tables or occasional stands that anchor a seating arrangement. Because of their decorative table tops, they are best positioned where natural light can catch the polished stone or detailed wood marquetry.

How do I tell Sorrento ware from other styles?

Sorrento ware is identified by its distinct regional marquetry, utilising contrasting fruitwoods and olive wood to depict detailed motifs. The work often has a bright, pictorial quality associated with southern Italian craft. Other styles, such as Florentine pietra dura or Grand Tour pieces, rely heavily on stone rather than wood veneers to create their imagery.

What is the difference between marquetry and parquetry?

Marquetry creates pictorial scenes, florals, and organic designs by fitting varied wood veneers together. Parquetry strictly employs geometric arrangements and repeating shapes. Many tables combine both techniques on the same top to create complex borders surrounding a central pictorial panel.

How should I care for a marble or stone top?

Stone and marble tops require gentle cleaning with a soft, damp cloth to avoid scratching the polished finish. Avoid using acidic cleaners or harsh chemicals that can etch the surface of specimen marbles or pietre dura panels. Using coasters and mats helps protect the historical surface from moisture and heat rings.
