What is a historic wooden box used for today?

These pieces serve as practical storage containers in modern interiors, holding blankets, documents, or household items while adding historical character to a room. Their robust construction ensures they remain functional furniture rather than purely decorative objects.

How do I date an antique oak coffer?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, tool marks, joinery styles, and the evolution of hardware over the centuries. Early sixteenth-century pieces often use boarded construction, whereas later periods favour joined frames. Secondary woods, nail types, and the style of any carved friezes further help narrow down the decade of manufacture.

Where should I place a desk box in my home?

A desk box sits well on a sturdy table, chest of drawers, or sideboard where its lid can open freely for access. Placing the box away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight protects the historic timber and any remaining surface finishes. These compact containers also function effectively on desks for storing modern stationery or letters.
