How do I date an old oil painting?

Dating relies on stylistic clues in clothing, hair and facial accessories, combined with the physical characteristics of the canvas and stretcher. Where should I hang a historic painting?

These works require stable environmental conditions away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources such as radiators. Maintaining moderate humidity prevents the canvas or wooden panel from warping and cracking. Interior spaces with gentle, indirect light allow the subtle tones of oil paint to be appreciated without risking pigment degradation over time.

What is the difference between canvas and panel?

Canvas is a flexible woven fabric that accommodates larger compositions and responds to atmospheric changes by expanding or contracting slightly. Panel paintings utilise solid wood supports that offer a rigid, smooth surface suited to fine detail. Panel works frequently date from earlier centuries, while canvas became the dominant support from the seventeenth century onward.
