What are hallmarked silver clips used for?

These items serve primarily to hold papers, menu cards, place markers, or book pages securely in place. Their secondary purpose was decorative adornment on Victorian writing desks or dining tables. Many examples double as miniature sculptures, combining utilitarian spring mechanisms with detailed figural designs depicting animals or literary characters.

How do I date a silver clip?

Dating relies on the stamped hallmarks showing the assay office, standard mark, and a specific date letter. Comparing these punches against official assay records reveals the exact year of manufacture. Stylistic cues such as Art Nouveau curves or Victorian ornamentation also help narrow down the production era.

Are these silver pieces marked as sterling?

British pieces generally display a lion passant alongside the anchor, leopard head, or other assay office symbols. These stamps confirm the silver meets the sterling standard of purity. Foreign imports or unmarked items may require closer inspection of the specific punches present on the metal surface.

How should I clean antique silver clips?

Gentle dusting with a soft microfiber cloth removes routine surface grime without harming the metal. Avoid harsh chemical dips, particularly on pieces containing organic elements like tortoiseshell or velvet. Specialist silver polish applied sparingly helps maintain the natural lustre built up over a century of existence.
