What periods do these river paintings come from?

The works span from the eighteenth century through the Victorian era into the mid-twentieth century. Most examples cluster around the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. During this time, landscape painting shifted from traditional studio compositions towards direct observation of nature, influenced by French and British impressionist movements.

How should I care for an oil painting on wood?

Keep wood panel paintings away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature shifts. Changes in heat and moisture can cause wood to warp and paint to crack. Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid using water or cleaning solutions on the paint or giltwood frame.

What is the difference between canvas and panel works?

Canvas offers a flexible woven textile support that responds subtly to atmospheric changes. Wood panels provide a rigid, stable surface that often allows for finer detail. Both materials were widely used, though panel paintings frequently appear in earlier or continental European schools.

How do I identify a watercolour from an oil painting?

Watercolours are painted on paper, usually displayed under glass to protect the delicate pigments from moisture and handling. Oil paintings use thick binders on canvas or wood, presenting a textured, unglazed surface. Oils allow for heavier layering and impasto work, whereas watercolours rely on the white of the paper shining through translucent washes.
