What defines a cocktail ring?

A cocktail ring is a large, statement-making piece of jewellery originally worn to social gatherings and evening parties during the twentieth century. These rings prioritise visual impact through generous proportions and bold gemstone combinations. Today, they remain popular for adding personality and historic charm to evening wear. Their substantial scale allows intricate metalwork and stone clusters to take centre stage on the hand.

How do I care for my emerald ring?

Emeralds are a softer gemstone compared to diamonds and require gentle cleaning with warm soapy water rather than ultrasonic cleaners. Avoid exposing the ring to harsh chemicals, sudden temperature changes, or heavy impacts that could compromise the stone. Regular inspection of the settings by a professional jeweller ensures the claws remain tight and secure. Storing the piece individually prevents the diamonds from scratching the softer emerald surface.

What is an Art Deco ring?

An Art Deco ring originates from the period between the First and Second World Wars, characterised by geometric symmetry and clean lines. These pieces frequently utilise platinum alongside contrasting yellow or white gold to create architectural patterns. The style embraces bold colour contrasts, pairing vivid green beryls with crisp rows of diamonds. This aesthetic remains one of the most sought-after genres in vintage fine jewellery.

Are these rings suitable for daily wear?

Many of these rings were built robustly using platinum or 18ct gold, making them suitable for regular wear if treated with reasonable care. However, the softer nature of emeralds means extra mindfulness is required during manual tasks. Choosing a sturdy bezel setting offers better protection for the central stone than high-profile claw settings. Proper maintenance and occasional professional checks help preserve the ring for everyday enjoyment.
