What is scumble paint?

Scumble paint involves applying a translucent glaze over a lighter base coat to create decorative patterns. Artisans used combs, feathers, and brushes to manipulate the wet glaze so it resembled natural timber grain.

How do I clean a painted chest?

Maintenance requires only a soft, dry cloth to remove dust from the decorated surface. Moisture and harsh cleaning chemicals should be avoided to protect the original nineteenth-century paint layers.

Where were these chests used?

These pieces served practical storage functions in bedrooms, nurseries, and housekeepers' rooms. Country houses and farmhouses utilised them widely because decorative finishes made softwood look expensive.

Are these pieces made of pine?

Pine and softwood form the primary structural material for the majority of these items. Carpenters favoured these accessible timbers before applying the decorative grain paint finishes.
