Where should I hang a gold overmantle?

These mirrors were originally built to sit squarely above a fireplace mantelpiece, where they naturally draw the eye and reflect light from the windows. They also work effectively on any large, uninterrupted expanse of wall in a high-ceilinged reception room or hallway.

How do I clean an antique gilded frame?

Gilded surfaces require very gentle care to avoid wearing away the delicate gold leaf or composition ornament over time. Dust the frame lightly with a soft, dry brush and avoid using chemical cleaners or damp cloths entirely.

How can I tell the period of a mirror?

Dating relies on examining the frame construction, the style of the carving, and the composition materials used beneath the gilding. Victorian and nineteenth-century pieces often feature distinct architectural motifs like rope twists, columns, and arched tops characteristic of the era.

Are these mirrors heavy to hang?

Due to their solid wood frames, thick gesso, and large sheets of glass, these statement pieces carry substantial weight. Secure wall fixings and professional installation into structural wall studs are essential for safe placement.
