Where should a gold leaf console go?

These tables suit entrance halls, drawing rooms, and formal corridors where floor space is limited. Their flat backs require placement directly against a wall. Pparing a console with a wall mirror or pier glass creates a traditional focal point. The surface holds small decorative objects or lamps.

How do I identify an eighteenth-century piece?

Eighteenth-century examples often display Italian or French regional carving characteristics, such as hand-applied gesso over solid timber frames. The proportions tend to reflect Baroque or Neoclassical design principles. Examination of the gilding and the reverse of the woodwork helps reveal the age of the construction. Tool marks and material shrinkage offer clues to the period.

Are marble tops original?

Marble tops on these tables vary in origin, with some replacements fitted during later restorations. Rouge marble and white variants appear frequently across the periods represented. Matching the edge profile and weight of the marble to the wooden base helps determine period consistency. A snug fit into the carved giltwood frame indicates correct alignment.

What is the difference between a console and a side table?

Console tables typically require wall attachment or feature brackets for stability against a vertical surface. Side tables are generally freestanding items with four independent legs. Both forms utilise carved giltwood and marble tops within this selection. The distinction lies primarily in how the base supports the weight.
