How do I identify a Victorian piece?

Victorian pieces often display specific material combinations like yellow gold paired with silver, alongside particular stones such as peridots, natural green sapphires, and citrines. The mounting techniques and hand-carved details also point directly to nineteenth-century manufacture. Examining the overall weight, clasp mechanics, and setting style helps confirm the historical period when combined with the design motifs typical of the reign.

What is a multi-gem pendant?

A multi-gem pendant incorporates several different types of coloured stones into a single ornamental drop. These can feature combinations of citrines, garnets, peridots, and amethysts arranged together. Such designs offer a vibrant display of varied hues, frequently set within nine carat or eighteen carat yellow gold frameworks.

Are pearl necklaces adjustable?

Pearl necklaces generally maintain a fixed length determined by the stringing or the number of strands, such as single, double, or eight-strand configurations. Adjustments usually require a professional jeweller to alter the silk thread. The security of the piece often relies on a fitted gold clasp, which may double as a decorative element with diamonds or gems.

How should I care for gemstone jewellery?

Care involves storing pieces individually to prevent softer stones like pearls from scratching against harder gems like diamonds. Gentle cleaning with appropriate solutions keeps the gold and stones bright without damaging delicate settings. Avoiding harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners is essential for organic materials like pearls and certain treated or softer gemstones.
