What is a tavern painting?

A tavern painting depicts social scenes inside drinking houses, featuring figures playing cards, smoking, or conversing. These artworks record historical social habits through detailed figurative composition.

How old are these paintings?

The works span from seventeenth-century Dutch styles to nineteenth-century Victorian interpretations. Dates range across various periods including the seventeen-fifties, eighteen-nineties, and early nineteen-twenties.

What surfaces were used?

Artists painted on stretched canvas, wooden oak panels, and metal panels. Some pieces also utilise watercolour on paper supports.

How should I hang one?

These pieces require sturdy wall fixings to support the weight of the heavy wooden surrounds. Placement away from direct sunlight protects the oil pigments and gold leaf over time.
