How do I identify a real Gillows piece?

Authentic pieces often feature stamped signatures directly into the wood, usually found on drawer tops or edges. Written inscriptions, paper labels, and characteristic Lancaster construction methods also help confirm attribution. Comparison with documented examples from the London and Lancaster workshops aids verification when physical stamps are absent or worn from decades of use.

What periods do these sideboards cover?

The available pieces span from the late eighteenth century through the Georgian and Regency eras into the Victorian period and the early twentieth century. Each era brings distinct proportions and ornamental vocabularies. Early pieces lean toward neoclassical lines in mahogany and satinwood, while later nineteenth-century examples embrace heavier revival styles and burr walnut veneers.

How were these sideboards used originally?

Dining rooms relied on these pieces for storing silver, linen, and serving dishes during formal meals. Serving tables and dumb waiters held food and drinks close at hand during service. Secretaire variations added a functional writing space to the room, allowing estate management and correspondence to take place within the reception rooms.

Where should I place a sideboard at home?

Dining rooms remain the traditional placement for serving tables and cabinets, offering practical surface space and interior storage for tableware. Hallways and drawing rooms also accommodate smaller chiffoniers and side cabinets. Placing these items away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources preserves the polished mahogany, rosewood, and delicate satinwood veneers.
