What is a gilded wood sign?

A gilded wood sign is a carved timber board finished with gold leaf, gilt, or paint, historically used for commercial or architectural display. These pieces range from specific trade and gallery markers to large department store shop signs.

How do I hang a heavy shop sign?

Heavy carved wooden signs require secure wall fixings distributed evenly across the structure of the board. Professional mirror plates or heavy-duty brackets suited to the weight of the timber are normally utilised. Consulting a professional installer ensures the piece remains safely supported on the wall.

How do I clean gilded wood?

Dusting gently with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth is the safest way to maintain gilded wood surfaces. Moisture and abrasive cleaners must be avoided to protect the fragile gold leaf and paint. Regular light maintenance preserves the historic finish without disturbing the aged patina.

Can I use these signs outdoors?

Most antique gilded wood signs were designed for interior commercial environments or sheltered exterior spaces. Exposing them to damp weather will damage the wood, paint, and gold leaf. Keeping these pieces indoors protects the materials from environmental degradation.
