What is a pedestal tea table?

A pedestal tea table is a small dining or serving piece raised on a central column rather than four corner legs. They were built for serving tea in polite society. Many examples feature tops that fold in half or tilt upward on a pivot mechanism when not in active use during the afternoon routine.

How do I use a tilt top table?

Tilt top tables serve as versatile display surfaces for lamps or decorative objects during daily living. The pivoting mechanism allows the top to lie flat for service. When floor space is needed, simply release the catch underneath and pivot the surface upright so the table tucks neatly against a perimeter wall.

How do I date a Georgian table?

Dating relies on observing timber choices, leg profiles, and structural joinery methods characteristic of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Earlier pieces often display rich red walnut or heavy oak. Later Regency and revival pieces incorporate brass inlay, rosewood, or amboyna timbers alongside more refined turning on the central pedestal column.

Where should I place this table?

These tables fit comfortably beside armchairs as lamp stands or serve as accent pieces in hallways and drawing rooms. Their compact footprint makes them ideal for corners. Avoid placing antique wooden furniture directly beside modern radiators or in strong direct sunlight to protect the fragile polished timber surfaces.
