What is a highboy dresser?

A highboy dresser is a tall storage furniture piece, typically comprising multiple stacked drawers arranged as a chest on chest or a chest on stand. These pieces maximise vertical storage capacity while occupying a relatively compact floor footprint in a room.

How do I place one at home?

These tall pieces suit bedrooms, hallways, or living spaces where vertical storage is required without sacrificing floor area. Ensure adequate ceiling clearance and secure taller stacked sections safely against the wall for stability.

What woods were used?

Cabinet makers constructed these pieces using primary hardwoods like mahogany, oak, and walnut, often embellished with figured ash or walnut veneer. Details such as boxwood inlay and brass hardware further defined the aesthetic of individual pieces.

How do I identify periods?

Period identification relies on observing timber choices, leg styles like cabriole supports, and construction methods characteristic of specific eras. Earlier pieces show walnut veneers and oak carcases, while later Georgian examples frequently feature solid mahogany and refined bracket feet.
